Korean sea salt roasted nine times inside bamboo tubes over a pine wood fire. That is where the violet colour and the strong sulphurous aroma come from. It carries over 80 trace elements and comes as loose powder or whole crystals.

Detailed information

Product detailed description

Purple bamboo salt is Korean sea salt that has been through nine rounds of roasting. It is dried in the sun, packed into bamboo tubes, the tubes are sealed with mineral clay and fired in a pine wood kiln. The whole cycle repeats nine times and takes over three years. Carbon and sulphur from the bamboo give the salt its violet cast.

The method was worked out by the Korean herbalist Dr. Insan in 1917, and he never patented it, he left the procedure in the open. Today it is made by the family firm Insan Bamboosalt, still by hand and with no mass production. The starting material is sun-dried fleur de sel from the west coast of Korea.

What comes out is a salt where minerals other than sodium make up roughly a tenth of the weight, among them potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, silicon, zinc and sulphur. Ordinary sea salt sits at around one per cent. Expect a strong sulphurous aroma, which puts this salt closer to a specialist seasoning than to the everyday salt in your shaker. It goes best with a hard-boiled egg.

Main benefits

  • Nine rounds of roasting – bamboo tubes, pine wood, mineral clay and three years of work
  • Over 80 trace elements – potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, silicon, zinc, sulphur and more
  • Roughly 10 % minerals other than sodium – ordinary sea salt sits at about one per cent
  • Made by hand – Insan Bamboosalt in South Korea, the traditional way, with no mass production
  • Two forms – fine loose powder or whole violet crystals
  • A character of its own – strong sulphurous aroma and a markedly mineral taste

Dosage

In Korea the salt is commonly left to dissolve on the tongue, two or three crystals at a time. Use the loose form as a seasoning for cooking, pickling and baking, or stir half a teaspoon into roughly 150 ml of water. Use it in moderation, as you would any salt.
