Calcium
Choose calcium by the amount of the mineral per serving, its source and the other ingredients in the formula. The range includes capsules and powders, calcium from algae or eggshells, and combinations with magnesium or vitamin D. A plant-based capsule shell alone does not make the contents vegan.

How to choose calcium
Actual mineral content, ingredient sources and differences between formulas.
Is the weight of the ingredient the same as the amount of calcium?
No. In Woldo Calcium from Red Algae, 2 capsules contain 1 000 mg of algae material providing 320 mg of calcium. Use the 320 mg figure to compare it with another supplement. Puhdistamo Triple Calcium, for example, lists 200 mg of calcium per capsule. Always check whether the table refers to one capsule or the full daily serving first.
How does a bone formula differ from calcium on its own?
A formula adds other nutrients that you may already take separately. Viridian Bone Complex contains 260 mg of calcium, 260 mg of magnesium, 10 µg of vitamin D3 and vitamin K1 in 4 capsules. It is different from calcium alone or a formula with K2. Compare the full ingredient table; more ingredients are not necessarily an advantage for your needs.
Is calcium in a plant-based capsule always vegan?
No. Puravia Ovovital has a plant-based capsule shell, but its calcium comes from eggshells, so the product is not vegan. Woldo obtains calcium from red algae and states that its formula is vegan. If you have an egg allergy, do not choose Ovovital based on the capsule shell alone; check the whole product. Also read possible trace-allergen warnings on other supplements.
Should I take calcium with food and the whole serving at once?
It depends on the form and the product instructions. Calcium carbonate is better absorbed with food, while citrate is less dependent on stomach acid. Larger amounts are often best spread throughout the day; Puhdistamo Triple Calcium explicitly allows for split capsule servings. This does not mean increasing the total daily serving. Include calcium from food in your total intake too.
Can I take calcium at the same time as iron or medicines?
It is advisable to take separate calcium and iron supplements at different times, as calcium can reduce iron absorption. Calcium also affects the absorption of levothyroxine and some antibiotics. Ask a pharmacist about the interval required for your particular medicine; there is no single interval for every product. If you have kidney disease, discuss supplementation with your doctor.
Compare your magnesium and vitamin D too, to avoid unnecessary overlap. For product information, contact info@bjp-store.cz.
