How to choose boxing gloves

Consider your training, the recommended glove weight and how the gloves fit over hand wraps.

What do 10, 12, 14 and 16 oz mean?

The number in oz indicates the weight of one glove, rather than a hand size such as S or M. A higher number does not by itself mean a better fit for a larger hand. The hand compartment and shape vary between models, so consider both weight and fit.

Which glove weight should I choose for my first sessions?

For bags and pads, use the manufacturer’s guide for your body weight and the model’s intended use. For example, Venum gives 12 oz below 70 kg and 14 oz above 70 kg as a general guide for all-purpose training. This is not an automatic recommendation for sparring.

For sparring, check your gym’s rules first; heavier gloves, often 16 oz, are commonly used. For help choosing a pair, send us your body weight, type of training and your coach’s requirements.

Can I use one pair for both bag work and sparring?

Only if that model is intended for both uses and meets your gym’s rules. Gloves designed solely for bags are not automatically suitable for hitting a partner. If you regularly do both, separate pairs make sense because bag work wears down the padding. A 16 oz label alone does not make a glove suitable for sparring.

How should gloves fit, and should I try them on with wraps?

Yes, try them with the hand wraps you will use for training. Your hand should feel secure without painful pressure on your fingers or thumb. Try closing your fist naturally and fastening the cuff; your hand should not slide around inside. Pain or tingling does not indicate a correctly snug fit.

Is hook-and-loop or lace-up more practical?

Hook-and-loop is quicker to put on and take off, which makes it practical for regular classes and changing stations. Laces allow finer adjustment but usually require another person’s help. During sparring, the closure must be secured so it cannot scratch your partner; follow your coach’s instructions.

How should I clean and dry my gloves after training?

Take them out of your bag, open the cuffs, wipe off sweat and let them air-dry in the shade. Keep them off radiators and out of washing machines and tumble dryers. Choose cleaners according to the manufacturer’s instructions for the material; harsh disinfectants may damage the surface or padding. Store them only when dry.

Complete your kit with hand wraps and, for contact training, a mouthguard.
