Questions about choosing adaptogens
Practical differences between extracts, blends and directions for use.
What do KSM-66 and the withanolide percentage mean?
KSM-66 is the name of an ashwagandha root extract. The withanolide percentage describes their proportion in the extract, not the weight of the whole capsule. In 2 capsules, BJP Ashwagandha KSM-66 Complex provides 600 mg of extract with 5 % withanolides, equivalent to about 30 mg of withanolides. Do not add these figures together. The same trademarked main ingredient also does not mean that the full blends have identical formulas.
Is maca powder the same as an extract?
No. Maca Root Organic contains 500 mg of root powder per capsule. Maca Extract Organic contains 400 mg of extract, which the manufacturer states is equivalent to 1600 mg of dried root. This conversion describes the starting material; it does not guarantee a proportionally greater effect. Compare the form, recommended serving and any standardisation. Milligram figures for different forms are not directly interchangeable.
Can an ashwagandha blend contain other herbs too?
Yes. BJP Ashwagandha KSM-66 Complex also contains cordyceps, rhodiola and black pepper. Viridian Enhanced Rhodiola Complex combines rhodiola with ingredients including ashwagandha, Siberian ginseng, schisandra and liquorice. Liquorice in particular can affect blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure or take medication, have the entire formula assessed, not just the herb named on the front.
Should all adaptogens be taken for the same period with a compulsory break?
No. There is no single established schedule of use and breaks for all these herbs and extracts. Our descriptions of some rhodiola products specifically advise against long-term use. Long-term data for ashwagandha are limited. Follow the individual product label and discuss extended use with a doctor or pharmacist. If you notice no benefit, do not automatically increase the dose or add another blend.
When should I seek advice before choosing ashwagandha?
Avoid ashwagandha during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you have a thyroid, autoimmune or liver condition, or take medication, discuss your choice with a doctor first. It can affect the action of certain medicines, including thyroid medicines and sedatives. A botanical origin does not make a product suitable for everyone, and another blend of the same herb may introduce additional substances.
