Choosing supplements for everyday care
Nutrient amounts, oil sources, live cultures and information to share before a medical test.
How do I find a particular type of supplement?
Look for oils containing EPA and DHA under omega fatty acids, and bacterial cultures and prebiotics under gut microbiome. Choose according to a specific need and the ingredients, rather than a broad word such as vitality. MCT oil and omega oil, for example, contain different fats and are not interchangeable just because the bottles have the same volume. Do not address persistent health symptoms by choosing a supplement based on its category name.
How do I compare omega oil capsules with a liquid?
Check EPA and DHA separately in the serving you actually take. Puhdistamo Super Omega 3 lists 178 mg EPA and 82 mg DHA in 2 capsules. Viridian Vegan EPA & DHA supplies 75 mg EPA and 150 mg DHA in 1 ml. These servings are different, and oil weight alone does not reveal the difference. The first product contains krill and fish gelatine, the second algae and chia oils; the source matters for allergies and a vegan diet.
Does Energy Magnesium provide an instant boost like coffee?
This name does not describe a caffeinated drink. BJP Energy Magnesium contains 375 mg magnesium, 30 mg Q10 and 1.4 mg vitamin B6 in 3 capsules; there is no added caffeine in the ingredients. The stated 375 mg applies to the full daily serving, while one capsule contains 125 mg magnesium. When comparing a multivitamin or mineral drink, add up actual servings rather than just the numbers on the front of the pack.
Do all probiotic capsules and oils need to be refrigerated?
Follow the directions for the individual formula. Synerbio Daily specifies a cool, dry place away from sunlight, whereas Vegan EPA & DHA must be refrigerated after opening and used within 6 weeks. For cultures, also check when the declared count applies: Synerbio states microorganism numbers at manufacture. Note the opening date; capsule count or bottle volume alone does not determine shelf life after opening.
Should I mention supplements before a blood test or when taking medicines?
Yes. Have the names, daily servings and ideally photos of the ingredients ready. Biotin 2500 µg, for example, contains a high biotin dose that can interfere with some laboratory tests and distort results. Tell your doctor and the testing service when you last took it. They will decide whether a pause is needed for the particular test; there is no universal number of days. A supplement list also helps a pharmacist check interactions with medicines.
