Omega Fatty Acids
Omega oils differ in their source and fatty acid profile. Distinguish between ALA, EPA and DHA, the amount per recommended serving and any added vitamins. The range includes fish, krill and plant oils, as well as algae products.

Choosing an omega oil
EPA and DHA content, plant-based alternatives, allergens and storage.
Is total oil quantity the same as EPA and DHA content?
No. Nordbo Scandinavian Omega-3 Trout Oil contains 1500 mg of oil in 2 capsules, including 55 mg of EPA and 145 mg of DHA: 200 mg of these fatty acids combined. To compare concentration, look at EPA and DHA in equivalent servings, rather than just oil weight. Even ‘total omega’ may include fatty acids beyond these two.
Is flaxseed oil the same alternative as algae-based omega oil?
They do not provide the same fatty acids. Flaxseed oil mainly supplies ALA, which the body converts into EPA and DHA only to a limited extent. Viridian Vegan EPA & DHA instead contains EPA and DHA directly from marine algae, alongside chia oil. If you specifically want EPA and DHA without fish, look for their stated amounts, not just ‘plant-based omega oil’.
What should I check for allergies or a vegan diet?
Check both the oil source and the capsule material. Krill is a crustacean, fish oil comes from fish, and capsule shells may contain fish or bovine gelatine. Puhdistamo Strong Omega, for example, has fish oil in bovine gelatine and is not vegan. Fish and crustacean allergies are distinct; choose according to the full allergen information for the particular product.
Do omega oils contain vitamins too?
Some do. Rosita cod liver oil also lists 1170 µg of vitamin A and 9.9 µg of vitamin D3 per 5 ml. If you also take a multivitamin or individual vitamins, include these amounts in the total. Do not treat cod liver oil as automatically interchangeable with a fish-oil product that does not have the same vitamin profile.
How do I choose between bottles and capsules, and store the oil?
For a bottle, consider measuring servings and the time allowed after opening; for capsules, check how many make up a serving. Rosita Extra Virgin Cod Liver Oil 150 ml should be refrigerated after opening and used within 3 months. Do not apply this rule to every product; capsules and other liquid oils may have different requirements. Follow your own pack’s label.
