Colostrum

Explore bovine colostrum in powders and capsules, including unpasteurised and kefir-fermented options. Compare the amount of colostrum per serving, processing methods and declared composition. It is an animal-derived dairy product; a plant-based capsule shell does not change that.

How to choose colostrum

Powders versus capsules, fermentation, IgG content and milk allergens.

What is colostrum, and is it the same as whey protein?

Colostrum is the first milk produced after birth; the products here come from cows. It contains a mixture of milk components, including proteins and immunoglobulins. Whey protein is processed differently and is primarily used to supplement protein intake. A few grams of colostrum should therefore not be compared with a full protein serving. To add protein to your diet, compare amounts per serving in our Protein category.

What is the difference between RAW and kefir colostrum?

RAW options are described as unpasteurised and freeze-dried. Kefir colostrum undergoes fermentation; QuraDea Kefir Special also lists pasteurisation before fermentation, followed by freeze-drying. These are different processing methods, not an automatic ranking of effectiveness. Fermentation alone does not guarantee zero lactose or a specific number of live cultures. Those details must be stated for the particular product.

What does an IgG figure in mg/g or percent mean?

IgG is one group of immunoglobulins, not the total weight of colostrum or all its proteins. For example, QuraDea's declared 264 mg/g corresponds to 26.4 % of the powder's weight. To compare products, you also need the amount of colostrum in the daily serving. Do not apply that figure to other products; a higher number alone does not promise better immunity or protection against illness.

Is fermented colostrum suitable for a milk allergy?

If you have a cow's milk protein allergy, avoid colostrum even when it is fermented. Lactose intolerance is different: the remaining amount of milk sugar and individual tolerance matter. Paleo Powders lists 5.5 mg of lactose per kefir capsule, rather than zero. This figure does not apply to other colostrum products and does not override the warnings on the specific pack.

Which is more convenient: powder or capsules?

Capsules contain a set amount: RAW BIO QuraDea lists 250 mg of colostrum per capsule, so the recommended 4 capsules provide 1 g. Measure powder by weight and follow the directions rather than estimating with a household spoon. For the powders here, manufacturers recommend dissolving them in the mouth or mixing with a cold drink; do not add them to hot coffee. Always check storage and serving instructions on your chosen pack.
