Before you open The Book of Five Rings
What to expect from Musashi's treatise and how to approach your first reading.
Is The Book of Five Rings a story or a manual?
It is primarily a treatise on strategy and swordsmanship in which Musashi explains his approach to combat and learning. Do not expect a novel's plot or Jiří Procházka's autobiography. It suits a reader who wants to explore the author's ideas and methods; a continuous narrative about a samurai's life calls for a different kind of book.
Do I need martial arts experience to understand it?
You can start without fencing experience, but expect historical martial terminology and examples. We suggest reading short sections and first establishing what the author describes in its original context. Then consider connections with your own training or decision-making. The book does not provide a ready-made training plan for modern MMA or a universal formula for success.
What do the five rings in the title mean?
The work is divided into Earth, Water, Fire, Wind and Void. These sections structure Musashi's explanation, from foundations and his own approach through combat to comparisons with other schools and concluding reflections. They are not five separate stories. On your first reading, start at the beginning so later passages build on the concepts already introduced.
