Finding the right sports equipment
Start with your discipline and training format, then choose the individual model.
What should I buy before my first martial arts class?
First ask the club what a beginner class involves and which equipment it lends out. Technique practice, bag work and contact with a partner have different requirements. If the club requires your own gloves, check the type and required weight. Do not buy a complete set based only on the sport's name; ask your coach for the list for that particular class.
Should I choose boxing gloves or MMA gloves?
It depends on the use. Boxing gloves have a closed construction for punching practice, while MMA gloves leave the fingers free for gripping. Not every model in either category suits every activity. For partner contact, check that the specific gloves meet your club's sparring requirements; an MMA label alone is not enough.
Do boxing and kick training require the same protective equipment?
No. Your equipment depends on the permitted techniques and level of contact. For example, shin guards address contact during kicks and are not automatically part of a standard boxing kit. In Combat sports protective gear, choose by the body area protected, size and training type. For sparring and competition, also check your club's or organiser's requirements.
Which equipment can I use alone, and which needs a partner?
In a normal training session, pads are held by a partner or coach; without one, they do not replace a hanging punch bag. For solo exercise, Training equipment includes skipping ropes, resistance bands, a reflex ball and floor exercise accessories. Before buying, also consider room to move and any mounting requirements.
