Choosing muesli and granola

Loose muesli, baked granola or porridge? Here is how their preparation and ingredients differ.

What is the difference between muesli, granola and porridge?

Muesli is a loose mixture of flakes and other ingredients; Samurai Muesli includes fruit, nuts and chocolate pieces, for example. Granola is baked and works well as a crunchy yoghurt topping. Both can be eaten without cooking. If you prefer a soft breakfast made with liquid, browse our porridge mixes and check the instructions for your chosen product.

Are all the mixes free from added sugar?

No. Maple Syrup & Pecan granola contains both maple and rice syrup; Toffee & Cashew also contains coconut sugar. In Samurai Muesli, sugar is present in ingredients such as the chocolate and cornflakes. Check the ingredients and compare the “of which sugars” values for the same amount of product. The word “protein” or the presence of fruit does not mean a mix has not been sweetened.

How much protein will my serving of granola provide?

The nutrition table usually refers to the dry mix. Maple Syrup & Pecan granola lists 22 g of protein per 100 g, so a 50 g serving provides 11 g of protein before you add yoghurt or milk. Count those separately using their quantity and label. Use values per 100 g to compare two granolas, and weigh the mix when calculating your own breakfast.

Are the protein granolas suitable for vegans?

Our Maple Syrup & Pecan and Toffee & Cashew granolas contain whey crispies, which are a milk ingredient. Samurai Muesli also contains milk. Adding an oat or almond drink to the bowl does not change that. For a vegan breakfast, check the full ingredient list; if you have an allergy, also read the warning about possible traces of milk, nuts or other allergens.
