ApiDrohn is 100% drone milk, meaning the contents of a comb cell holding a drone larva, processed by gentle lyophilisation or freeze drying. In the specialist literature the raw material is known as Apilarnil. The powder is the sole ingredient of the product, with no carrier and no filler. The pack holds 100 g and comes in Miron violet glass.

The material is taken at a specific stage of development, just before the cell is capped. Fresh drone milk spoils within minutes, so it has to be processed almost immediately. The freeze-drying method was developed and refined by chemist and beekeeper Dr Thomas Gloger at Api-Zentrum Ruhr. Apilarnil was originally described and patented by Nicolae Iliesiu in Romania in the 1980s.

The taste is gently honeyed and sweet with a nutty finish and a light savoury edge, milder or stronger depending on the batch. The powder is meant to dissolve slowly in the mouth, which is exactly why the freeze-dried form suits it better than a paste. The drones come from apiaries in the foothills of Münsterland and Sauerland in Germany.

Dosage

The recommended daily amount is 1 g of powder. Let it dissolve slowly in the mouth, ideally in the morning. Take it in courses of several days and leave a break at least twice as long between them. Store cool, dry and dark.
