Essential is Joya's entry range, and the brand packed into it what it learned across twenty-four years of building guards. No experiments, just a proven cut, triple density foam and synthetic leather that takes more bag work than a training season.

The guard covers shin and instep in one piece and is held by a pair of hook-and-loop straps. Fastening is usually the first thing to give way on cheaper guards; Joya carried over the strap system from its dearer ranges. The shape is pre-curved, so it does not roll on the leg and you are not straightening it mid-round.

The black and gold matches our Essential MMA gloves, so a kit that goes together is easy to build. Sold as a pair.

Choosing a size

Joya publishes no size chart for this range. Go by height and calf girth: S suits smaller builds up to roughly 170 cm, M is the everyday best seller, L fits taller and heavier legs, XL the heavyweights. The guard should sit firm without pinching behind the knee.

Care and lifespan

Undo the straps after training and let the guards dry fully open, not pressed together in a bag. Wipe them with a damp cloth; a washing machine or a radiator destroys the foam. Replace them once the foam stops springing back or the outer layer starts lifting.
