Junior sizing at OPRO is built for a child's dentition up to the age of 10, for a mouth where teeth and the gaps between them are still shifting. The shell is smaller and narrower than the Senior size, otherwise this is the same Gold level with ComfortElite gel and impression fins. OPRO treats the ten year mark as a guide; the width of the jaw decides.

The outer layer is the hard one and keeps the shape, the inner one is soft gel. On the Gold level OPRO calls it ComfortElite Gel and adds impression fins that squeeze into the gaps between your teeth while you fit it. The bite is taken in the patented Compression Cage, so the pressure does not land only on the incisors.

In the OPRO hierarchy Gold ranks above Silver and Bronze. All three levels are dual-layer, the Gold one differing through a finer gel with impression fins and a higher stated dental warranty, up to €15,000 instead of €12,500 on Silver and €10,000 on Bronze. The manufacturer builds it for frequent competition, while Silver covers training and weekly matches.

How to fit it

1. Get a ceramic bowl of freshly boiled water ready, so around 100 °C.
2. Hold the guard in it for exactly 20 seconds, not a moment longer. The OPRO self-fit ranges need twenty seconds; thirty belongs to the Instant Custom Fit.
3. Lift it out with a spoon, tip it over so the hot water runs off, then give it ten firm shakes.
4. Seat it in the Compression Cage fitting tray, centre the tray on your upper teeth and bite down hard. Stay there for 30 to 60 seconds and press on your lips and cheeks as you go, so the material closes onto teeth and gums.
5. Open the bite, remove the tray and drop the guard into cold water for half a minute.

The material can be remoulded. If the result does not sit right, run through the whole procedure again.

With children an adult should run the fitting, since it involves boiling water.

Specifications

Care and lifespan

Rinse the guard in cold water after training, let it dry and only then close it in its case. Hot water, the dishwasher and direct sun all deform the material, and so does leaving it in a hot car. For a deeper clean, use the tablets made for mouthguards and removable dental appliances. Replace it once it cracks, stops holding its grip or has been bitten through, and with children also as soon as the dentition has visibly changed.

Warning

The guard is not intended for wearers of fixed braces, for which OPRO makes a separate Gold Braces model. It does not replace a guard made to measure by a dentist. The manufacturer honours the dental warranty only once the guard has been registered and under its own terms. Moulding involves boiling water, so mind the scalding risk.
