Saryu Pure Himalayan is shilajit in its original form: a thick, dark mineral resin that seeps out of rock crevices in the High Himalayas of Nepal during the summer months, at roughly 4 000 to 6 000 metres. It is collected by hand, purified the ayurvedic way and jarred as a sticky mass with a strong earthy smell.

You scoop out a pea-sized piece with the spoon that comes in the jar, dissolve it in hot water, tea or warm milk and drink it on an empty stomach. The taste is bitter and smoky, odd at the first sip, familiar within a few days. The resin softens in warmth and stiffens in the cold, so it lifts off the spoon more easily if you hold the jar in your hand for a moment.

In ayurveda shilajit belongs to the rasayanas, substances used for centuries for overall revitalisation, and it first appears in the Charaka Samhita. Saryu purifies it by a patented method owned by the government of Nepal and supervised by its ministry of health, and every batch is analysed for heavy metals and pathogens at the independent ALS laboratory in the UK. You can choose between 50 g and 100 g.

How to use

The daily serving is 0.5 to 1 g, a pea-sized piece. Dissolve it in a mug of hot water, tea or warm milk and drink it on an empty stomach, ideally first thing in the morning or in the evening before bed, at least 30 minutes away from a meal. Sweeten with honey if you like. Start at 300 to 500 mg and build up from there. After three weeks to a month of daily use you can take a week off. Do not exceed the recommended serving.
