A fruiting body powder of Japanese lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus), known in Japan as yamabushitake. An extract of the whole fruiting body milled down to 150-micron particles, 100g in a Miron violet glass jar. One serving is 3g, so a jar holds around 33 of them.
The mushroom comes from the mountainous Takatsumi area of Nagano Prefecture and is grown from a wild Japanese strain. The name yamabushitake refers to the yamabushi, the hermit Buddhist community that walks the Japanese mountains. Across Asia lion's mane is a prized culinary mushroom with a long history in the local kitchen.
The powder is very fine, so it disperses in warm water, in soup, in juice or in yoghurt, and it stirs happily into whatever you already cook. For anyone who gets on badly with swallowing capsules, loose powder is far easier, because you measure the serving with a spoon. According to the producer's testing, the mushroom contains at least 25% (1-3)(1-6)-beta-D-glucans.
