Nothing else in the line lets your own teeth show through the way the clear version does. Clear suits anywhere you would rather not think about club colours or match a guard to a shirt, and in training it is the least conspicuous of the lot. There is a practical bonus too: through transparent material you can see whether the guard is genuinely clean.

Instant Custom Fit sits at the top of the OPRO range and differs from the cheaper models in the way it is built. There are three layers instead of two: a dental grade outer shell that spreads the energy of an impact across a wide area, the patented dual compression cage with hyperflex technology underneath, and high flow gel fins inside that wrap around every single tooth as you mould it.

The material is EVA, free of BPA and latex, the guard carries CE certification, and the manufacturer adds a dental warranty of up to €20,000 for twelve months. That is the highest cover in the whole OPRO range: Gold sits at €15,000, Silver at €12,500 and Bronze at €10,000. Bought from a retailer, the warranty needs registering with the manufacturer.

How to fit it

1. Drop the mouthguard into the fitting tray and hold it in freshly boiled water for exactly 30 seconds. That is ten seconds more than the Gold, Silver and Bronze self-fit ranges need, because the Instant Custom Fit material heats through more slowly. Beyond thirty seconds the material suffers.
2. Lift it out and shake it firmly for about ten seconds to clear the hot water and take the edge off the temperature.
3. Centre the tray over your teeth and bite down hard. Hold for at least 30 seconds, 60 is better.
4. Release the bite, take the tray out and put the mouthguard in cold water for 30 seconds.
5. Let it set before the first session: fifteen minutes in the fridge, or an hour at room temperature.

If it still shifts around in your mouth, run the whole process again.

Care and lifespan

Rinse the guard under cold running water after training and let it dry completely before it goes back in the case. Hot water, the dishwasher and the washing machine are all out, because heat and agitation warp the shape. Keep it out of a parked car and off the radiator too. The manufacturer recommends replacing a mouthguard once a year, and sooner as soon as the material thins, tears or shows bite marks. For children and teenagers that yearly swap matters even more, because the jaw and the teeth are still moving. The dental warranty runs for twelve months from purchase.

Warning

This guard is not made for fixed braces; OPRO builds a separate version for those. Moulding involves boiling water, so children should do it with an adult present. Never share a mouthguard, the impression only matches one set of teeth. Rinse it before and after use and stop using it once it is damaged.
