Entry-level guards for stand-up kicks
The black Venum Contender 1.5 XT 3D shin guards cover your shin and instep during partner kick drills, pad work and stand-up sparring. Choose them if you are starting out in Muay Thai, kickboxing or MMA and want lightweight guards for regular training. Venum designs them for 3–4 sessions a week.

Embossed 3D motif and lightweight construction
Injected foam in both the shin and instep sections absorbs impact in kicks and blocks. The guard is lightweight, so it does not weigh your leg down as you move, and the synthetic leather outer wipes clean easily after training.
Two hook-and-loop straps at the back let you adjust the fit around your calf so the guard does not slip. The black outer has an embossed 3D pattern of Venum lettering, with a gold logo on the shin and gold lettering on the instep.
Choosing your size
How the guards should sit on your leg
Sizes M, L and XL are available. Let shin length and comfort decide: the padding should cover the shin from just below the knee to the instep, and the instep section should lie on the top of your foot.
The straps take care of the fit around your calf but cannot change the length. If the guard ends too high or presses into your knee, change size.
- Fasten both strapsTighten them so the guard stays put without squeezing your calf.
- Walk and bend your legThe top edge should not press into your knee when you bend it.
- Kick out and blockThe guard should stay centred on the shin and the instep section on your foot.
Size guide
Choose your size using shin length. Measurements are in centimetres.
| Size | Shin length (cm) |
|---|---|
| M | 36 |
| L | 38 |
| XL | 40 |
How to measure: Measure your shin from just below the knee to the ankle joint. Use your shin length, rather than your whole leg or the guard’s instep section.
Fit advice: Between sizes, Venum recommends the smaller option for a closer fit or the larger option for more room around the calf.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use them for sparring too?
Yes, Venum lists them for Muay Thai, kickboxing and sparring. Check with your coach whether they meet your gym's sparring rules, as these vary.
What if the guard twists round?
Check the size and the tightness of both straps. If it sits correctly on the shin and still slides, it may be too big for your leg, and strapping it tighter will not fix that.
Is there any difference from the white version apart from the colour?
No, it is the same model with the same construction, padding and sizes. The only difference is the colour of the outer.
How do I look after them after training?
Take them out of your bag, wipe them with a damp cloth and let them air dry. Do not dry them on a radiator or machine wash them.
The foam in the guards softens the impact of kicks and blocks, but it does not make you injury-proof. Agree the intensity with your partner and coach.

The gear UFC fighters walk out in
Venum is a French combat sports brand founded in 2006. Since 2021 it has been the UFC's exclusive outfitting partner, so UFC fighters step into the Octagon wearing Venum. The brand covers MMA, boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, from first gloves to fight-night kit.
Venum pairs well-thought-out construction with bold design. Its gloves use multi-density foam, an attached thumb and wide hook-and-loop straps; its shorts and rashguards use lightweight stretch fabrics with reinforced seams. Many of its leather gloves are handmade in Thailand, the home of Muay Thai.
