Resveratrol
Resveratrol is an antioxidant. More than 70 plant species have been identified as sources of resveratrol, although not all are edible. Resveratrol is also classified as a phytoalexin. Phytoalexins are compounds that plants produce to fight pathogens, such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses. When plants sense infection, they produce more phytoalexins, which help against microbial invaders but also against harmful effects ultraviolet radiation. This means that plants that produce resveratrol and other types of antioxidants actually do so partly as a protective mechanism and response to external stressors.
