MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is an organic form of sulfur, commonly found in nature.

MSM is created in the ocean, where microscopic plankton releases sulfur into the seawater, from where it escapes into the atmosphere. In the gaseous state, it reacts with ozone and ultraviolet radiation to form dimethyl sulfate (DMSO) and DMSO2, known as MSM. MSM then falls to the ground with rain.

MSM can break down some bacteria in nature. Fortunately, some of the microorganisms living in the human digestive tract are also able to create the valuable amino acid methionine (or the related cysteine) and other inorganic sulfur compounds from organically bound sulfur. Plants can also perform a similar reaction, which is why we naturally find methionine in small amounts in them.

On the contrary, humans cannot produce these amino acids themselves, so they are dependent on their intake through food. In the natural diet, methionine is found, in addition to animal sources, mainly in cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, lettuce, seaweed, onions, and to a large extent in garlic (we can recognize this by the typical smell of raw garlic) and others.

When is it appropriate to consider using MSM?

However, heat treatment destroys methionine, and people lose sources of this valuable amino acid.

Nowadays, it is not uncommon for people to lack methionine and other sulfur compounds. We can easily recognize their reception by warning signals.

In such cases, supplementing with methionine from MSM simply compensates for the condition that caused its deficiency.

Recommended dosage: when taken internally, 1/2 teaspoon twice a day, washed down with two cups of clean water or fresh orange juice

MSM can also be used topically because it is very well absorbed into the body through the skin. 

Contraindication: Avoid taking MSM with blood thinners, including those containing acetylsalicylic acid (which some painkillers also contain).

It is a chemically distinct substance, not a mixture of organic substances. Therefore, the effect of MSM is always the same, although it can come from different sources.

In such a case, it is necessary to pay attention not to the origin of the substance, but to its purity. Only 100% pure MSM can bring positive effects to the body.

It is not a source of carbohydrates, fats, proteins or fiber.
